Celebrated filmmaker Imtiaz Ali is making a much-anticipated return to the director’s chair with a heartfelt new project, slated for a Baisakhi 2026 release. Known for giving Indian cinema some of its most memorable explorations of love and identity, Ali’s upcoming film promises to once again touch the depths of human emotion—this time with a fresh, contemporary twist.

The yet-untitled film will go on floors in August 2025 and boasts a powerful ensemble cast featuring Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, and Sharvari. Set against a vast yet intimate backdrop, the story is said to intertwine themes of love, loss, identity, and belonging—elements that have become signature to Ali’s storytelling.

Speaking about the project, Ali offered a poetic glimpse into the film’s emotional essence: “It’s the story of a boy and a girl… but also of a country. It has a big heart and is deeply personal, though set on a grand canvas.” He further reflected on the idea of longing with a poignant couplet by Momin: “Tum mere paas hote ho goya, jab koi doosra nahin hota.” He added, “Can love really be lost? Can home ever be taken from someone’s heart?”

Adding to the excitement is the return of one of Bollywood’s most beloved creative trios—A.R. Rahman, Irshad Kamil, and Imtiaz Ali—reuniting after delivering iconic music in Rockstar, Highway, and Tamasha. The promise of soul-stirring music paired with a profound story makes this a project to watch.

While the title is still under wraps, early whispers suggest the film will delicately balance humour and heartbreak, tradition and modernity, personal emotion and broader social context. Its release during Baisakhi—a festival symbolising renewal and hope—feels symbolic of the film’s deeper message.

For fans of Imtiaz Ali’s cinematic world, this upcoming project could mark yet another unforgettable journey—one that echoes long after the credits roll.
