After decades of yearning for a live-action movie and years of waiting for a release, the Deadpool & Wolverine duo is finally hitting the big screens with anticipation among fans. The debut of comic-book-based antihero character Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings the franchise’s first R-rated cinema, breaking from the family-friendly fare. Here’s a spoiler-free review of the latest release from MCU, Deadpool & Wolverine.
For Marvel fans who have been eagerly waiting for this crossover, Deadpool & Wolverine brings Hugh Jackman’s iconic Wolverine back into the picture after his emotional farewell in Logan, alongside Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as the ‘Merc With A Mouth,’ Deadpool. Helmed by Shawn Levy, the sci-fi actioner reunites characters from the X-Men lore and MCU movies as the two superheroes team up to defeat a common enemy, travelling through different universes.
The movie begins with Deadpool’s signature elements: violence, blood, action, and irreverent humour, as he teams up with Wolverine from a different universe. While the story feels rushed and somewhat aimless throughout, the dynamics and bonding between the leading duo outshines the plot’s shortcomings. The film is filled with exciting and unexpected cameos throughout its 2 hours 7 minutes runtime, and the performances by the supporting cast are equally satisfying. However, the villain Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin, lacks the menacing nature that many were expecting.
The VFX and CGI play a vital role in the sci-fi actioner but it lacked here and there, joining the recent trend of inconsistent executions in the MCU. However, Deadpool’s iconic witty lines, sarcasm and fourth-wall-breaking paired with Wolverine’s gruff and rugged charm overshadow the shortcomings in the special effects. Some humour may not hit the mark but it still makes for a memorable watch. The makers could have had an extra 30 minutes to build the story with more depth and could have made all the difference in fleshing out the plot.
Ultimately, Deadpool & Wolverine is a fun, popcorn-friendly romp that will delight the fans of the genre and that of Deadpool. As an all-out action movie, it honours its predecessors while carving out its unique identity and stands out as a refreshing, R-rated entry that brings a much-needed dose of maturity to the MCU. Be sure to stay for the post-credits scene, and note that this film is not suitable for children under 13, unlike the other MCU movies, due to its mature themes and content.
