When David Corenswet was announced as the new Superman, the internet was quick to criticise. Many fans of Henry Cavill weren’t ready to see someone else don the iconic red cape. But fast forward to today, and Corenswet’s portrayal is winning over audiences, with the film now reaching a major milestone at the North American box office. It’s on track to outperform Man of Steel, both domestically and potentially worldwide.
While Man of Steel had a mixed response upon release in 2013, it has grown into a fan favourite over the years. Henry Cavill’s take on Superman was praised for his commanding presence and strong screen appeal. In contrast, Corenswet brings a softer, more hopeful version of Kal-El. His portrayal stays truer to the comic book roots, and under James Gunn’s direction, the character feels more human and emotionally grounded.
According to Box Office Mojo, the new Superman film brought in $10.1 million on its second Tuesday, marking the second-highest second Tuesday for a DC movie. It fell by just 40.9% from the previous Tuesday and even surpassed Lilo & Stitch to become the biggest second Tuesday of 2025. With that, the film has reached $253.2 million in just 12 days at the North American box office.
Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel finished its domestic run with $291.04 million. At the current pace, Corenswet’s film is expected to overtake that number by the end of its third weekend. It’s also expected to cross the $300 million mark in the coming days. Globally, Cavill’s Superman had earned $670.1 million, a target the new version also looks likely to beat.
Released on July 11, Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The film is currently projected to earn between $370 million and $405 million in North America alone.
