Captain America: Brave New World, starring Anthony Mackie, hit Indian theatres yesterday, but its box office performance has been underwhelming. The film struggled to generate excitement among audiences, with muted buzz and competition from Chhaava affecting its day 1 collection. Compared to previous Marvel releases, the response was lacklustre, resulting in a much lower opening than expected.
Marvel has cultivated a strong fan base in India over the years, with MCU films often enjoying solid openings even without heavy promotions. However, this time, the usual enthusiasm was noticeably missing. One major factor could be the absence of Chris Evans, as the transition to Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America hasn’t generated the same level of anticipation.
On its first day, Captain America: Brave New World collected an estimated ₹4.50 crore net at the Indian box office—significantly lower than Captain America: Civil War, which opened to ₹8.53 crore in 2016. This marks a steep decline of over 47%.
Adding to its challenges, the film is facing mixed audience reactions, making strong weekend growth uncertain. Meanwhile, Chhaava has become the centre of attention and is expected to dominate the box office in the coming days. With competition heating up, it remains to be seen how Captain America: Brave New World will perform in the long run.
