Jeff Fowler’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has achieved a major box office milestone, overtaking Venom: The Last Dance to secure a spot among last year’s top 10 highest-grossing films. The action-adventure movie has not only won over audiences but is also on track to potentially become Jim Carrey’s highest-grossing film.
With the success of Sonic 3, Paramount Pictures has confirmed that a fourth instalment is in development. While plot details remain undisclosed, the franchise continues to expand its cinematic universe with new characters and storylines, solidifying its place as a major blockbuster series.
Currently, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 holds the record for the highest earnings in the franchise. In contrast, Tom Hardy’s Venom: The Last Dance is the lowest-grossing entry in its trilogy, earning $139.75 million domestically and $478.89 million globally. Until this weekend, Venom 3 held the #10 spot on the 2024 box office charts. However, despite a steep 58.1% drop in its 10th weekend and a significant reduction in theatres (down to 591), Sonic 3 has now accumulated $235.3 million in the US. Industry projections suggest its final domestic total will land between $235 million and $237 million.
On the international front, Sonic 3 has amassed $248 million, pushing its worldwide earnings to $483.30 million—officially surpassing Venom: The Last Dance.
While the film’s box office momentum has slowed following its digital release, there’s still a chance it could cross the $500 million mark in the coming weeks. With this latest success, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has now crossed $1 billion in total global earnings. Sonic 3, which premiered on December 20, originally clashed with Mufasa: The Lion King, yet still managed to hold strong in the charts.
