This weekend’s U.S. box office is turning into a thrilling three-way showdown, with Disney’s Lilo & Stitch maintaining its commanding lead while Karate Kid: Legends and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning battle it out for second place.
After a historic Memorial Day weekend haul of $146 million over three days and a staggering $182 million in four, Lilo & Stitch shows no signs of slowing down. Despite predictions of a 50%+ drop in earnings, the animated adventure is expected to pull in between $55 million and $65 million this weekend. Thanks to summer vacations already starting for nearly half of U.S. schools, the film continues to attract families in large numbers. It now sits ahead of Inside Out 2 at a similar stage in its release, despite the latter not enjoying a holiday boost.
On the global front, Lilo & Stitch has already crossed the $400 million mark and is rapidly heading toward the $500 million milestone, cementing its blockbuster status.
Meanwhile, Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends enters the ring with strong expectations, projected to earn between $25 million and $35 million over the weekend. With a 15% share of total showtimes, the film is riding high on the nostalgia wave fueled by the Cobra Kai series. Jackie Chan’s return has piqued fans’ interest, though early reviews are mixed. Still, the film hopes to strike a chord with longtime fans and new viewers alike.
Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the grand finale of the iconic franchise, is also holding strong. Projected to earn between $25 million and $32 million this weekend, it holds an 18% share of showtimes. The Tom Cruise-led spectacle had a franchise-best $64 million opening, but its nearly three-hour runtime is limiting the number of daily screenings, which could give Karate Kid: Legends a slight edge.
With its status as the final chapter in the Mission: Impossible saga and a massive reported budget of $300–$400 million, the stakes are sky-high for this film to deliver a commercial win.
In short, Lilo & Stitch remains the reigning champ at the box office, while Karate Kid: Legends and Mission: Impossible 8 are locked in a tight race for the runner-up position. One thing’s for sure — this weekend’s box office battle is as entertaining as the films themselves.
