Karate Kid: Legends, featuring martial arts icons Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, has officially crossed the $50 million mark at the global box office. However, the film’s performance so far has been modest, especially when measured against the legacy of the franchise and the anticipation surrounding its release.
The movie hit theatres on May 30 and entered with sky-high expectations, thanks to the nostalgia factor and the return of beloved characters. Unfortunately, it opened to mixed reviews from critics and an equally divided audience response, which has impacted its box office momentum.
In North America, Karate Kid: Legends earned $20.3 million over its opening weekend. It saw a noticeable dip on Monday, bringing in just $1.37 million. A slight rebound occurred on Tuesday, with earnings climbing to $2.43 million, helped in part by discounted ticket pricing.
As of now, the film has collected $24.11 million domestically in its first five days, according to Box Office Mojo. If it continues at this pace, it is expected to surpass The Karate Kid Part III ($38.95 million) soon and climb into the top five highest-grossing films of the Karate Kid franchise.
On the international front, the movie has added another $26 million, bringing the total global earnings to $50.11 million. While this marks a milestone, it still falls short of what fans and analysts had predicted for a film of this scale.
With a production budget reportedly around $45 million, Karate Kid: Legends needs to hit approximately $90 million worldwide to break even. That means it still has a gap of nearly $40 million to close. Despite lukewarm reactions, industry insiders remain hopeful that it will gradually make its way to profitability.
Whether Karate Kid: Legends will manage to win hearts and boost its numbers in the coming weeks remains to be seen, but for now, the film’s journey has been more modest than mighty.
