Ayushmann Khurrana’s Diwali release Thamma has set the box office ablaze with an impressive opening in India. Produced by Dinesh Vijan under the Maddock banner, the film marks the strongest debut for an origin story within the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU), which includes hits like Stree, Bhediya, and Munjya.
Overwhelmed by the audience response, Ayushmann shared his excitement about achieving the biggest opening of his career with his first Diwali release. “I’m an entertainer at heart, and it fills me with happiness to see audiences enjoying Thamma during the Diwali holidays. When Dinesh Vijan told me that the film was releasing on Diwali, I was thrilled. It’s something I had always dreamed of,” he said.
The actor reflected on how special it felt to have his own film release during a festival usually reserved for Bollywood’s biggest superstars. “Having carved my own niche with offbeat, quirky films, I always wanted to bring my kind of cinema to the Diwali slot. Thamma is the tentpole film of my career, and getting this release window feels surreal. Every year I would go to the theatre with my family to watch a superstar’s Diwali release, and this year, I went with them to watch my own. It’s an incredible feeling,” he added.
Ayushmann called the film’s success a validation of his journey in Hindi cinema and thanked audiences for embracing his unconventional character. “I’m grateful for the love Thamma is receiving. Playing an Indian ‘betaal’ was a challenge with no reference point, and to see people enjoying it in theatres makes it all worth it,” he said.
With strong word of mouth and festive momentum, Thamma is expected to deliver the biggest opening weekend of Ayushmann’s career while expanding the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe.
Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar of Munjya fame, Thamma stars Ayushmann Khurrana alongside Rashmika Mandanna in their first collaboration, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles.
