Playback singer, Asees Kaur who has lately taken over the song ‘Panghat’ for the film Roohi (2021) starring Janhvi Kapoor reveals why music is a spiritual journey for her.
Belonging to a Sikh family, Kaur remembers how her parents wanted her to connect to God and do Paath. She tells how her father always wanted her to sing Gurbani and that lead to the beginning of her journey. From then on, she found a soulful connection with music and fell in love with it. At the age of five, she began singing Shababs in the Gurudwaras. Now at 32, she is climbing the ladder and sung ‘Jaan Ban Gaye’, ‘Dildara Reprise’, ‘Ve Maahi’, ‘Tere Bin’, and ‘Bolna’ from the films, Khuda Hafiz, Tamanchey, Kesari, Simmba and Kapoor and Sons respectively.
Defining her success she says that when the audience endears her singing and tell how much did her music touch their hearts, she thinks of it as the best response. Asees finds it wonderful that her challenges have been more of a process to her. She admits having to deal with the music directors to be where she is today since she belonged to a non-film background.
Where opportunities for the young talent in our country is concerned, she says that there is enough room to enter the music industry since non-film music is on the rise and the industry has been very encouraging towards new singers.
In the music world, Kaur is deeply inspired by Madan Noor Jahan Ji. She has been listening to her songs since childhood and her singing style is something she wants to adopt. In the present generation, singer Arijit Singh, A.R. Rahman and Shankar Ehsaan Loy have been an inspiration to her.
The singer’s upcoming song is coming out on April 18 with the DMF, it’s a very beautiful Punjabi number. She is certain that people will enjoy dancing to it at weddings. Another release would be a romantic song coming up with Tipz music.
