Animal has achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the highest-grossing Indian film in both Australia and Canada. Surpassing Pathaan, Animal claimed the top spot in these markets, where it initially opened to record-breaking numbers. The film maintained its strong performance throughout the weekdays, culminating in its recognition as the all-time highest-grosser on the same day.
The success of Animal in Canada and Australia indicates the significant growth experienced by Indian films in these regions, particularly in Canada. The influx of migrants from India, particularly Punjab, has contributed to this surge. Animal, with its positive portrayal of Punjabi characters and outstanding musical composition, including the chart-topping “Arjan Velly,” has resonated enthusiastically with the global Punjabi community. Notably, Animal also surpassed Gadar 2 on the same day it claimed the title of the highest-grossing Indian film in Australia and Canada, securing its position as the top-grossing Bollywood film in mainland Punjab.
The Canadian market has demonstrated a threefold increase in the last five years. Eight out of the top ten-grossing Indian films in Canada were released this year, with only one from the previous year, underscoring the market’s recent dominance. Padmaavat, the top grosser in 2018 with CAD 2.82 million, has now been surpassed, with Animal eyeing a finish above CAD 7 million. The trajectory suggests that the day an Indian film crosses the CAD 10 million mark in Canada may not be too distant.
In Australia, Animal has achieved a noteworthy approximate gross of AUD 4,750,000 in just 16 days. Meanwhile, in Canada, the film has garnered approximately CAD 6,135,000 in the same period, solidifying its position as the highest-grossing Indian film in these lucrative international markets.
