Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country, the entertainment industry is one of the most affected sectors of the nation with the complete shutdown of theatres and multiplexes. While the theatres remain closed in order to curb the spread of the deadly virus, a debate for the release of the movies over OTT platforms instead of traditional theatre screening gained momentum.
While the filmmakers ponder over the two platforms, veteran film producer Anand Pandit, who is bankrolling Abhishek Bachchan starrer The Big Bull, says that it is fine to have two releases of a movie. “It is subject to the understanding the producer has with the OTT player and theatre owner and the agreement drawn up. If it is mutually decided to have a theatre release after an OTT one, why should there be a concern,” the producer said.
The filmmaker further added that a film’s content, cast and quality are taken into consideration to decide whether it will release over an OTT platform, a theatre or both. “There is also the international markets to explore given that much of Europe, other parts of Asia and Australia have begun unlocking at a rapid pace,” he added. While the opening of movie halls remain out of the unlocking versions of the country in the near future, the Coronavirus scare is going to be prevalent even if the theatres open in certain cities and OTT platforms are going to be the only source of mass entertainment for now.
Helmed by Kookie Gulati, The Big Bull is a biological crime drama which stars Abishek Bachchan, Nikita Dutta and Ileana D’Cruz as the primary characters. The highly-anticipated movie will mark its premiere over the OTT platform, Disney+ Hotstar.
