Despite stiff competition at the cinemas, Ana de Armas’ Ballerina has pulled off an impressive feat, outperforming the original John Wick at both the domestic and worldwide box office. The high-octane spin-off is proving it’s more than just a franchise filler, and Ana is solidifying her place as a rising force in the action genre.

While big-budget films continue to dominate theatres, Ballerina is quietly carving out its own path. With just two weekends under its belt, the film has managed to outpace John Wick’s box office total in record time. Ana de Armas, who has already proven her action chops in past roles, now leads her first major solo film within the John Wick universe — and it’s paying off.

According to Box Office Mojo, Ballerina earned $9.8 million in its second weekend in North America and added $939K on its 11th day (Monday), bringing its domestic total to $43.12 million. Overseas, the film has raked in $49.7 million, pushing its global haul to $92.8 million. It’s expected to cross the $100 million mark in its third weekend.

To put that into perspective, 2014’s John Wick, which kickstarted this entire cinematic universe, earned $43 million domestically and an identical $43 million internationally, totalling $86.08 million worldwide. Ballerina has already surpassed that figure in just 11 days, making it a standout success among franchise newcomers.

Directed by Len Wiseman and written by Shay Hatten, Ballerina follows Eve Macarro, a deadly ballerina-turned-assassin on a mission to avenge her father’s death. The film blends grace with brutality, and though it faces a crowded release calendar, critics have responded positively to its sleek direction and Ana’s fierce performance.

Marketed as From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, the film not only honours the legacy of Keanu Reeves’ original but expands the universe with a fresh and compelling lead. Released on June 6, Ballerina may have started with modest expectations, but it’s proving that it’s more than capable of carrying the torch — and the franchise — forward.
