Alia Bhatt has always shown that she is a formidable opponent. She made her big-screen debut in 2012 with Student of the Year, and since then, there has been no halting her might. With her recent performances in Gangubai Kathiawadi, RRR, Darlings, and the recently released Brahmastra, Alia has established herself as the most lucrative box office queen, since all of her movies made money at a time when most Bollywood movies came crashing down.
Gangubai Kathiawadi-
In Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie, Alia played the titular role of a prostitute-turned brothel owner-turned politician-activist Gangubai Kathiawadi. The movie was released soon after the epidemic, and despite the numerous limitations on movie theatre viewing, it nonetheless did well at the box office. It became the third-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022 with around Rs 209.77 crore at the global box office. The actress received praise not just for her flawless performance but also for starring in a film with a female lead and producing a hit at the box office with her quality. Ajay Devgn, Seema Pahwa, Vijay Raaz, Jim Sarbh, and Shantanu Maheshwari all had significant parts in the movie.
RRR-
Alia’s next appearance was in SS Rajamouli’s period drama RRR, where she was a member of an all-star cast that included Ram Charan and Jr. NTR. Ajay Devgn and Shriya Saran both had significant parts in the movie. Rajamouli’s picture broke barriers, becoming one of the most popular movies of the year, and set several records at the box office. It rose to the third-highest-grossing Indian film, bringing in between Rs 1,150 to 1,200 crore globally.
Darlings-
Darlings marked Alia’s first production as a producer and actor. Shefali Shah, Roshan Mathew, and Vijay Varma also had prominent parts in the movie. Despite having an OTT release, the movie’s actors and plot won praise from critics. The movie has the highest opening weekend viewing figures of any non-English original Indian film globally with over 10 million watch hours.
Brahmastra-
Brahmastra, Alia’s most recent movie in which she first appears on-screen alongside her husband Ranbir Kapoor, has dominated the box office, demonstrating its status as Bollywood’s messiah. Despite having a massive budget of Rs 410 crores, Ayan Mukerji’s film is now having amazing success at the box office. The movie is on track to become one of the highest-grossing movies of the year after earning Rs 9.25 crores globally in only seven days after release. Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Mouni Roy, and Dimple Kapadia are also starred in the film. Ayan directed the first part of a trilogy, which Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions produced.
While Alia is undoubtedly enjoying a fantastic year at the box office, Deepika Padukone holds the record for the most Rs 100 crore films an actress has starred in. Alia is just one film behind Deepika in the Rs 100 crore club with 7 films, whereas Deepika has a total of 8 films that have reached the Rs 100 crore milestone.
Deepika and Alia have both established themselves as two of Indian cinema’s top actresses. Fans can’t get enough of Alia and Deepika breaking new marks in a field that is thought to be dominated by males, and they sure do it well!
Alia will appear in upcoming films- Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani and Jee Le Zaraa, while Deepika will appear in Project K with Prabhas and the Hindi remake of The Intern called Pathaan.
