Ali Fazal continues to take on diverse film roles, with another unique project in the pipeline. He will star in the psychological thriller The Underbug, directed by Shujaat Saudagar and also featuring Hussain Dalal in a lead role, among his impressive lineup of films set to release in the coming year.
The psychological thriller film, currently in post-production, was shot during a brief period of relaxation during the COVID-19 lockdowns in late 2020. It was filmed primarily in a single location in rural Maharashtra. Little is known about the plot, but it is rumoured to centre around two characters, X and Y, and their encounter in an abandoned house on Independence Day. Much of the details surrounding the film are being kept under wraps.
According to Ali, the film he worked on was unique compared to his previous projects. It was filmed during complex and chaotic conditions, amid the ongoing pandemic. One of the most challenging aspects for him was gaining the weight necessary for the character, which was very different from his usual physique. The script for the film was a collaborative effort between the actors, writers, director, and the Director of Photography, whose vision was closely aligned with the story they were trying to tell.
The upcoming edition of the Slamdance Film Festival will feature the film as an official selection, which will be held from January 20-26 in Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah in person, and from January 23-29 online.
