With the advent of Coronavirus, the entertainment industry was amongst the first to be affected by the viral pandemic. While shootings for movies and other production activities have been halted since mid-March, movies which were scheduled for a theatrical release got cancelled or postponed. Meanwhile, many filmmakers started a trend and sold their movie rights to OTT platforms for a digital premiere.
Starting with small budget movies, many big production houses are also seeking a digital release for their movies amid the Coronavirus scare. Following Amitabh Bachchan starrer Gulabo Sitabo and Vidya Balan’s Shakuntala Devi, the reports suggest that Akshay Kumar’s horror-comedy, Laxmmi Bomb, will also join the bandwagon and premiere on the OTT platform. A source close to the development of the movie informed that the movie will premiere on Disney+ Hotstar and waiting for post-production to complete to make the official announcement.
While the release date has not been decided yet, the rights have been sold at a whopping 125 crore rupees which is double the usual price for digital rights of a film. The producers are planning to complete the remaining post-production work with minimal workforce once the lockdown is lifted. However, it will still take months to get to the releasing phase. “The film won’t hit the OTT platforms at least till a month after the lockdown is lifted. So the release date isn’t decided yet,” added the source.
Helmed by renowned filmmaker Raghava Lawrence, Laxmmi Bomb is the Hindi remake of superhit Tamil horror-comedy Muni 2: Kanchana. The movie also stars Kiara Advani and Sharad Kelkar in prominent characters.
