After 20 years, Priyadarshan’s cult comedy Malamaal Weekly is set for sequel

With romantic dramas finding renewed love in 2025 through films like Saiyaara, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat and Tere Ishk Mein, the next two years are expected to belong to comedy. Several big comic entertainers are already lined up for 2026 and 2027, including Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, Welcome To The Jungle, Dhamaal 4, Bhagam Bhag 2, Hera Pheri 3 and Golmaal 5. Now, another fan favourite title is preparing to make a comeback.

Malamaal Weekly 2 is officially in development.

Sources reveal that discussions are underway, and the creative team has locked in an idea that fits perfectly within the spirit of the original. While it will not be a direct continuation of the first film, the sequel will retain the core theme that made the 2006 comedy a hit. The new story will revolve around a fresh set of characters in a different village, once again driven by greed and chaos as they chase a massive sum of money.

Paresh Rawal has reportedly agreed in principle to be part of the sequel, though he has yet to sign the contract. Conversations are also ongoing with Riteish Deshmukh and Rajpal Yadav, both of whom were part of the original ensemble.

Released in March 2006, Malamaal Weekly told the story of a small village where the only educated man discovers that a fellow villager has won a lottery worth Rs 1 crore. The twist was that the winner had already died. What followed was a series of hilarious and desperate attempts by the villagers to conceal the death while trying to claim the money for themselves.

Directed by Priyadarshan, the original film featured an ensemble cast that included Reema Sen, Shakti Kapoor, Sudha Chandran and the late Asrani, Rasika Joshi and Innocent. Over the years, it has earned cult status among comedy lovers.

If all goes as planned, Malamaal Weekly 2 could add another strong contender to the growing list of Bollywood’s comedy sequels, bringing back the madness of rural greed with a modern twist.
