Actor Kalki Koechlin debuts as a writer with the book The Elephant In the Womb after films like “Margarita with a Straw”, “Yeh Jewani Hai Deewani” and “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”. The book is published by award-winning publishing house Penguin Random House India.

The book is different from a graphical representation. It consists of personal essays and think-pieces and is a funny relatable book based on pregnancy and parenting that mothers, expectant mothers, and anyone even thinking about motherhood should give a read. The book is beautifully by Ukrainian artist Valeriya Polyanychko, and the personal journal entries are captured in real-time, alongside reflections and anecdotes.

While talking about the experience and inspiration, Kalki reveals that while she was battling her pregnancy and her new role as a mother, her friends supported her by sharing their rough phases and advises her how they go through it with laughter and reflections, which helped the actress more than those who spoke only of the glorious, blessed babe in arms that brought light into their lives.

Ukraine illustrator also comments that motherhood of often taken for granted and people assume that it’s something that just happens. She tells how Kalki’s book makes use of her quick wit and sense of humour and takes the reader down the road of parenting. She informs that  Kalki’s emotional journey deeply resonated with her and illustrating the book for her has been one of the most wonderful experiences she has ever had.

With utmost honesty, The Elephant in the Womb seamlessly merges the deeply private with the blazingly political. It’s an eye-opener for the people who think that pregnancy is all about the glow and that motherhood was all about fulfilment. Koechlin’s proses amusingly cover everything from fixing broken parts to coping with untimely farts and gives us an insight and by revealing the truth about the physiological discomfort and expectations that make it a bittersweet experience.
